Amnesty International Calls for Release of Detained Sierra Leonean TV Personality Hawa Hunt

Amnesty International has called for the immediate release of Hawa Hunt, a Sierra Leonean-Canadian TV personality, who has been in detention since December 2024.

Hunt faces charges under Sierra Leone’s Cybersecurity and Crime Act, accused of insulting President Julius Maada Bio and First Lady Fatima Bio in a social media video.

Her arrest has sparked concerns over freedom of speech and press freedom, with rights groups arguing that the law is being used to silence dissent and critics of the government.

Amnesty International has urged authorities to drop the charges and ensure fair legal proceedings, warning that Hunt’s case sets a troubling precedent for digital rights and freedom of expression in Sierra Leone.

The government has yet to respond to the growing calls for her release.
