Armed Group Releases Four Moroccan Truck Drivers Kidnapped in Burkina Faso

Four Moroccan truck drivers, who were kidnapped by an armed group in Burkina Faso, have been freed after several tense days in the Sahel region.

The drivers disappeared on Saturday morning while travelling along the road between Dori in northeastern Burkina Faso and Téra in western Niger.

According to the Moroccan embassy in Burkina Faso, the drivers were released late Monday evening. The embassy confirmed that they would soon return to Morocco, but emphasised that a thorough investigation is required to clarify the circumstances of the kidnapping and identify those responsible.

Echarki El Hachmi, Secretary-General of the Moroccan Transport Union, stated that the armed group released the drivers without major incidents. However, their trucks and cargo remain missing. Reports indicate that the convoy, consisting of several trucks, was intercepted in a border area between Burkina Faso and Niger.

The drivers were taken to a remote forest and deprived of their vehicles and goods.
The drivers’ sudden disappearance, after travelling more than 4,800 kilometres over 20 days, caused significant concern among their families and the union. Efforts are ongoing to recover the vehicles and investigate the incident.
