The African Union (AU) Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has urged the Trump administration to reconsider its decision to withdraw the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO).
In a statement issued on Thursday, Mahamat expressed deep concern over the move, following reports that re-elected US President Donald Trump had signed executive orders, including one to formally initiate the withdrawal process.
The AU Chairperson highlighted the vital role the WHO plays in global health, particularly in a world grappling with rapid population growth and frequent health crises. He emphasised that collaboration with the organisation is essential for addressing public health challenges and protecting populations worldwide.
Mahamat also acknowledged the United States’ support for the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and its contributions to public health on the continent. He noted the importance of continued cooperation between the US, the WHO, and its member states to tackle pandemics and enhance global preparedness and response efforts.
