Benin Authorities Adjusts Charges Against Businessman and Former Minister Ahead of Coup Trial

Authorities in Benin have modified the charges against businessman Olivier Boko and former minister Oswald Homeky, who are accused of involvement in an attempted coup d’état.

Initially charged with conspiracy against state security, money laundering, and corruption of public officials, the Court for the Repression of Economic and Financial Offenses (CRIEF) has slightly amended the charges.

Although details of the modifications remain undisclosed, legal experts suggest the adjustments aim to streamline the prosecution’s case as preparations intensify for the highly anticipated trial, scheduled to commence on January 21, 2025.

Both Boko and Homeky have denied any wrongdoing, with their legal teams calling for transparency and due process.

The trial is expected to draw significant public and international attention, given the high-profile nature of the accused and the gravity of the allegations.
