Benin Implements Nationwide Legal Aid to Ensure Equal Access to Justice

Beninese President Patrice Talon has issued a decree establishing legal aid across the country, ensuring equal access to law and justice for all citizens.

The initiative, announced during Wednesday’s Council of Ministers meeting, is designed to prevent discrimination in accessing justice due to factors such as illiteracy, lack of legal knowledge, ethnicity, gender, religion, economic status, or disability.

With the adoption of this decree, individuals of modest means or limited legal knowledge will now have the right to legal representation and assistance.

Citizens will be able to seek help from legal professionals for court proceedings, receive support in drafting legal documents and official correspondence, and obtain advice on resolving disputes outside the courtroom.

This measure aims to protect the rights of all Beninese and provide avenues for justice and compensation in cases of injustice.
