Benin’s Former Sports Minister Detained for Alleged Coup Plot

Benin’s state prosecutor announced on Wednesday that former Sports Minister Oswald Homeky and prominent businessman Olivier Boko have been arrested on suspicion of plotting a coup against the government of President Patrice Talon.

This comes as the country faces growing concerns about political instability across West and Central Africa.

According to the prosecutor, Homeky was apprehended after being caught handing over six bags of cash to the head of the Republican Guard, tasked with the security of President Talon.

The transaction, which took place in the early hours of Tuesday, is believed to be a bribe aimed at securing the military’s non-interference in the coup planned for September 27.

Investigators allege that both Homeky and Boko bribed the military commander to ensure that the Republican Guard would not resist during the coup attempt.

The commander has also been detained as part of the ongoing investigation, with authorities working to identify other individuals involved in the conspiracy.

This case adds to the growing threat of coups and military takeovers in West and Central Africa, with several countries in the region recently experiencing political upheavals.
