Opposition parties in Benin have united in a strong demand for the release of cyber-activist Brother Hounvi, who was recently arrested in Lomé, the capital of Togo.
In a press conference held in Cotonou, Benin’s commercial capital, the opposition leaders called for his immediate release and urged their supporters to mobilize in solidarity on the day Brother Hounvi is presented to the special prosecutor’s office of the CRIET (Court for the Repression of Economic Offenses and Terrorism).
Brother Hounvi, a vocal critic of Beninese President Patrice Talon, has been recognized by the opposition as a key figure in their struggle.
Despite being in hiding for eight years, he has been actively denouncing what they describe as the excesses of Talon’s governance.
The opposition parties see his arrest as a direct attack on freedom of expression and political dissent.
Daniel Edah, a former presidential candidate, expressed his solidarity with Brother Hounvi, emphasizing the broader significance of his fight. “We are in solidarity with his fight; it is a citizen’s fight, it is a fight for transparency, and we can only unite and stand up against what is happening to him,” Edah stated.
