Boat Accident in Nigeria’s Benue State Claims 10 Lives

At least 10 people have died after a boat capsized on River Benue near Ocholonya in the Agatu local government area of Benue State, according to police spokesperson Catherine Anene.

The accident, which occurred on Saturday, involved a boat carrying mostly traders to a local market.

While 10 bodies have been recovered so far, search and rescue efforts are still ongoing.

This tragedy adds to the growing toll of boat accidents in Nigeria, which have claimed over 220 lives this year. Overcrowding, poor maintenance, and the lack of life jackets are cited as key factors contributing to these fatalities.

Authorities continue to urge stricter safety measures to prevent further incidents on the nation’s waterways.
