Burkina Faso’s transitional government has announced its intention to join the BRICS group, according to Prime Minister Apollinaire Joachim Kyélem de Tambèla. Speaking on Tuesday, Tambèla emphasized that the country seeks to leverage the benefits offered by the BRICS alliance to boost its development efforts.
The Prime Minister expressed hope that the current BRICS members would welcome Burkina Faso’s request to join. He also mentioned that Russia’s ambassador to Burkina Faso had earlier expressed support for the country’s inclusion in the group.
The BRICS group—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—has emerged as a prominent coalition of emerging economies that seek to challenge the dominance of Western-led institutions like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF). Since its inception, BRICS has emphasized multipolarity in international governance, economic collaboration, and alternative development pathways for nations outside Western influence.
For Burkina Faso, joining BRICS could open the door to economic, diplomatic, and strategic opportunities. With access to new financial institutions like the BRICS New Development Bank and potential trade agreements with member countries, Burkina Faso stands to benefit from development aid, infrastructure projects, and investments in critical sectors such as energy, agriculture, and mining.
