Burkina Faso’s transitional government has frozen the assets and economic resources of 113 individuals and two legal entities, including prominent figures and organizations accused of terrorism-related activities.
The list, issued by Minister of Economy Dr. Aboubacar Nakanabo on November 19, 2024, includes former President of the Transition Paul Henri Damiba, two former foreign ministers, and Gendarmerie General Djibril Bassolé. Notable journalists such as Alpha Barry, Abdoulaye Barry, and Newton Ahmed Barry, along with former deputy mayor of Dori Aziz Diallo, are also named.
The decree affects several military officers, including Amed Kinda, former commander of the National Theater Operations Command (COTN); Yves Didier Bamouni; and Romeo Ouoba, former special forces commander.
These individuals have been implicated in a plot to destabilize Burkina Faso’s transitional government.
The order extends to armed terrorist groups operating in the country, such as the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM), the Macina Liberation Front, Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, Ansar Dine, Almourabitoune, and the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara.
The accused parties face allegations of participating in or financing acts of terrorism.
The sanctions, which include asset freezes and other restrictions, will last for six months and are subject to renewal.
This decisive move underscores Burkina Faso’s ongoing efforts to strengthen security and combat terrorism amid persistent challenges in the Sahel region.
