Burkinabe Authorities Confirm Foreign-Led Coup Attempt

The Burkinabe transitional government has revealed evidence confirming an attempted destabilization orchestrated from abroad.

In a video broadcast on national television on Sunday, September 29, 2024, former special forces commander Ahmed Kinda, considered a key figure in the plot, confirmed the government’s findings.

Commander Kinda, seen wearing an orange t-shirt and flanked by two alleged accomplices, recounted being arrested on August 30 in Niamey, Niger.

He explained that he was stopped by police while en route with an individual named Ousmane to retrieve weapons intended for the operation.

Kinda further disclosed that “Central African mercenaries” were involved in the plot, which had financial backing. According to Kinda, journalist Abdoulaye Barry initially provided Ousmane with 10 million CFA francs for the operation, later increasing the amount to 80 million following a misunderstanding.

On September 23, Burkina Faso’s Minister of Security, Mahamadou Sana, condemned destabilization efforts by Burkinabe residents in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Nigeria aimed at undermining the country’s security.

A judicial inquiry has since been launched, and the Minister of Security has vowed to present concrete evidence to the public.

The transitional authorities have consistently raised alarms about repeated destabilization attempts in recent months.
