The Burkinabe transitional government has reported significant progress in its fight to regain control over its territory, announcing that nearly 70% of the country’s land is now under central government authority.
This key update was provided by Burkina Faso’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, during his address at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.
Traoré highlighted that this achievement comes as part of ongoing efforts by the government to reclaim land previously occupied by extremist groups and armed insurgents.
The northern and eastern regions of Burkina Faso have been severely impacted by militant activity in recent years, contributing to widespread instability and displacement.
Karamako said the outcome of the government’s territorial gains has been the return of approximately 700,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their hometowns.
The minister noted that the restored security in several areas had allowed displaced families to safely return and begin rebuilding their lives.
