Burkinabe President Grants New Year’s Pardon to Nearly 1,200 Inmates

Nearly 1,200 inmates in Burkina Faso will benefit from a pardon granted by transitional president Captain Ibrahim Traoré as part of New Year celebrations.

Justice Minister Rodrigue Bayala announced that approximately 400 inmates will receive full remission of their sentences, 750 will benefit from partial remission, and three serving life sentences will have their terms commuted to time-bound imprisonment.

The pardon, set to take effect on January 1, 2025, aims to reduce prison overcrowding and help reintegrate beneficiaries into society.

Minister Bayala emphasized the importance of enabling these individuals to contribute to the country’s development while addressing issues within the prison system.
