Burkinabe Transitional Government Lifts Curfew in Eastern Region After Years of Security Measures

The longstanding curfew in Burkina Faso’s eastern region, established in 2019 as part of counter-terrorism efforts, was officially lifted on Monday.

The decision was announced by Siaka Ouattara, Secretary General of the Eastern Region, in a press release, with the curfew ending at 4 a.m. on Tuesday, November 12, 2024.

Ouattara expressed appreciation to the residents of the region for their “civic spirit, high sense of patriotism, and continued commitment” throughout the curfew period.

He underscored the importance of ongoing collaboration between civilians and the defense and security forces to maintain regional stability.

While the curfew has now ended in the east, restrictions remain in effect in northern parts of the country, where security forces continue offensive operations against militant groups.

Burkina Faso has faced a rise in insecurity since 2015, along with neighboring Sahel nations such as Mali and Niger, in the fight against extremism.
