Chad Declares Three Days of National Mourning Following Deadly Boko Haram Attack

Chadian authorities have announced a three-day period of national mourning following a deadly attack by Boko Haram on an army base in the Lake Chad province, which claimed the lives of 40 soldiers.

The mourning period, which began at midnight on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, will continue through Friday, November 1, to honor what officials describe as “martyrs who fell on the field of honor.”

The attack occurred late Sunday night, October 27, between 10 p.m. and midnight, targeting a military base in Barkaram, west of Ngouboua in the Lac province’s Kaya department.

Following the incident, President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno visited the site on Monday morning to assess the damage, honor the fallen soldiers, offer support to the wounded, and boost troop morale.

In response to the attack, President Déby ordered the launch of Operation Haskanite, a mission to pursue the assailants and secure the region.

The recent violence underscores the ongoing challenges Chad faces from Boko Haram, which has perpetrated numerous attacks across the Lake Chad basin, impacting Chad, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Niger.
