Chadian Media Protests Ahead of Legislative Elections Over Regulatory Restrictions

Tensions are mounting in Chad between the online press and the country’s media regulatory authority, Hama, just days before the legislative elections.

On Monday, private media outlets across written, radio, and online platforms observed a “day without press,” a protest that is set to continue on Tuesday.

The media’s collective action stems from Hama’s controversial ban on online outlets broadcasting audiovisual content, a decision that the Supreme Court has since overturned. Despite the legal ruling, journalists remain defiant, pledging to fight for press freedom and threatening to boycott the December 27 elections.

a Chadian journalist and protest organizer in N’Djamena revealed that the press is determined to defend their rights despite ongoing challenges.
