Chad’s Ruling Party Secures Majority in Boycotted Election

Chad’s Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS), led by President Mahamat Idriss Deby, has won two-thirds of the seats in the country’s legislative election, according to provisional results released on Sunday.

Held on December 29, the election marked Chad’s first vote in over a decade and saw a participation rate of 51.56%.

The ruling party secured 124 of 188 seats in the National Assembly, solidifying Deby’s hold on power three years after he declared himself interim leader following the battlefield death of his father, former President Idriss Deby Itno.

This legislative victory comes months after Deby was officially elected president in a disputed vote in May 2024.

However, opposition leader Succes Masra’s Transformateurs party and several other groups boycotted the election, alleging irregularities and lack of transparency—claims the government has denied.

The election also included regional and municipal polls, which were similarly criticized by opposition groups. Despite concerns over fairness, the results pave the way for Chad’s transition to constitutional rule.
