Fifteen Chadian soldiers lost their lives, and 32 others were wounded during intense clashes with Boko Haram fighters over the weekend.
General Issakh Acheikh, spokesperson for the Chadian army, reported that 96 Boko Haram militants were killed in the operation, which also resulted in the capture of arms and equipment. Specific details on the location and circumstances of the clashes were not provided.
The Lake Chad region, frequently targeted by insurgencies, has been a focal point of attacks by both Boko Haram and Islamic State in West Africa, stemming from violence that originated in northeast Nigeria in 2009.
Last month, approximately 40 Chadian soldiers were killed in a militant assault on a base in Chad’s Lake region, prompting interim President Mahamat Idriss Deby to consider withdrawing Chad from a multinational security alliance.
Chad continues to play a critical role as an ally for French and U.S. forces combating a persistent 12-year jihadist insurgency in the Sahel region.
