Côte d’Ivoire Extends Voter Registration Deadline to November 17

Côte d’Ivoire’s Electoral commission has extended its voter registration period by one week, now set to conclude on November 17, 2024.

President Alassane Ouattara issued a presidential decree allowing the additional time for eligible citizens to register.

The extension follows appeals from the Ivorian opposition and has been welcomed by many as a move to enhance voter inclusion.

The extra week aims to give more citizens the opportunity to participate in the electoral process, potentially boosting turnout in the upcoming elections.

The decision to extend the voter registration period has sparked a mix of reactions across Côte d’Ivoire.

Civil society groups and election observers have expressed optimism that the additional time will allow for a more inclusive and representative voter base.

Analysts suggest that higher turnout could lead to a more robust electoral process, strengthening the legitimacy of the eventual outcome.

In the days following the extension announcement, registration centers saw an uptick in activity, with citizen’s eager to secure their place on the voters’ list.

Many young people, first-time voters in particular, expressed a renewed sense of engagement, with social media campaigns urging them to take advantage of the additional time.

Opposition leaders had previously raised concerns about limited access to registration centers in rural areas, a challenge that the electoral commission is now addressing with mobile units to reach remote communities.

The commission has also assured the public that it will improve logistics and security at registration centers to accommodate the expected increase in turnout.
