Nearly 30 soldiers were killed in a deadly attack on a military post in northern Benin, close to the country’s borders with Niger and Burkina Faso.
Colonel Faizou Gomina, head of the National Guard, described the attack as a “very hard blow” to the army, urging military officers to take action.
The attackers have not yet been identified, but northern Benin has seen increasing violence linked to jihadist groups from nearby countries. A security official reported 28 soldiers killed, while an opposition group, “The Democrats”, claimed the number was 30.
In response, military forces launched an operation and reportedly neutralized 40 attackers.
