Displaced Families in Nigeria Appeal for Support to Restore Children’s Education

Displaced persons from nine communities in Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State, are calling for urgent assistance to address the growing educational crisis among their children. The displacement, triggered by violent attacks and compounded by the closure of a military base in Allawa, has left hundreds of children unable to attend school for over a year.

Families from affected communities have sought refuge in public buildings in relatively safer towns such as Erana and Kuta. While immediate needs like food, healthcare, and shelter are pressing, parents and community leaders are raising alarms over the long-term effects of interrupted education on displaced children.

The crisis began with a series of deadly assaults by armed groups, which forced many residents to flee their homes.

The situation worsened with the closure of the Allawa military base, leaving the communities more vulnerable and exacerbating the displacement.

Local and international organizations have provided some humanitarian aid, but education remains largely overlooked. Many displaced children are living without access to learning facilities or materials, further deepening the educational gap.
