ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Staff Reaffirms Commitment to Regional Security

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff (CCDS) concluded its 42nd Ordinary Meeting in Abuja, reaffirming its determination to tackle security challenges and uphold democratic stability in the sub region.

Held from August 7 to 9, 2024, the meeting was chaired by Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa. The discussions emphasized the urgent need for enhanced regional cooperation to address persistent security threats, including terrorism and transnational organized crime.

A significant outcome of the meeting was the approval of a security mission to Sierra Leone, involving the deployment of 1,200 troops.

This decision aligns with the directive issued by the Authority of Heads of State and Government during the 64th Ordinary Summit in December 2023.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff committed to reinforcing the mission by establishing a headquarters and a joint intelligence fusion center to bolster their efforts.

During the meeting, the Chiefs of Staff also paid a courtesy call on Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who currently serves as the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

President Tinubu praised the CCDS’s efforts and assured them of the Authority’s full support in securing the necessary resources to protect and stabilize the region.
