Equatorial Guinea’s government has launched a strict crackdown on sexual activities in government offices after explicit videos, allegedly involving a senior finance ministry official, circulated on social media.
The videos, reportedly filmed in various locations including the official’s office, have sparked outrage and embarrassment for the Central African nation.
In a statement on Tuesday, authorities expressed concern over the impact of the scandal on the country’s international image. The leaks have brought an unusual level of scrutiny to a government long ruled by President Teodoro Obiang, who has held power for 45 years, making him the world’s longest-serving president.
Local media reported that during a raid linked to a corruption investigation, authorities found hundreds of amateur videos at the finance official’s residence.
The videos reportedly feature multiple women, some of whom are allegedly related to influential figures within the government. WAVN, however, could not independently verify the authenticity of the footage.
Following the scandal, Vice President Nguema Obiang Mangue announced new security measures to prevent similar incidents in government offices.
These measures include the installation of security cameras and increased monitoring of government facilities.
The decision was made in collaboration with the Supreme Court, the attorney general, and other officials during an emergency meeting.
Officials implicated in the videos will be suspended, though their names were not disclosed, while those responsible for building security will face disciplinary action for inadequate oversight, according to the government statement.
This development comes amid ongoing scrutiny of the administration’s governance practices in Equatorial Guinea, a nation of approximately 1.7 million people.
The incident highlights growing calls for transparency and ethical reforms within the government.
