Ex-Allies of Benin President to Face Trial Over Coup Plot Allegations

Two former close associates of Benin’s President Patrice Talon, Olivier Boko and Oswald HomĂ©ky, are set to stand trial before the Court for the Repression of Economic Offenses and Terrorism (CRIET) on allegations of conspiracy against state security and bribery.

The duo was arrested in September 2024 amid suspicions of plotting a coup, a claim that has since garnered widespread public and political attention due to the prominence of the accused and the gravity of the charges.

As the trial begins, Boko and HomĂ©ky’s legal teams have expressed confidence in their defense, maintaining optimism about achieving acquittals.

The case is expected to have significant implications for Benin’s political climate, with observers closely monitoring developments as they unfold.
