A former Guinean defense minister Dr. Mohamed Diané, has been sentenced to five years in prison and fined five billion Guinean francs (GNF) after more than a year of legal proceedings.
The case, involving the special prosecutor’s office and the Guinean State, was presented on Wednesday before the CRIEF Trial Chamber.
While the five-year sentence has already been handed down, the final decision in the case is expected on December 18, 2024. During this upcoming hearing, the court will determine whether the confiscation of the former minister’s assets, both identified and unidentified, will be confirmed.
This could include properties, bank accounts, and other assets acquired during his time in office.
The civil party in the case has requested not only the confirmation of the asset seizures but also the payment of 500 billion GNF in damages, which would significantly increase the financial repercussions faced by the former defense minister.
If approved, this would represent one of the largest fines in Guinean legal history.
