Former Malian Transitional Council VP Pleads Not Guilty to Defamation Charges

Former vice-president of Mali’s National Transitional Council, Issa Kaou Djim, has pleaded not guilty to charges of publicly insulting Captain Ibrahim Traoré, President of Burkina Faso, during a televised debate on Joliba TV News.

Djim, who has been in custody since November 13, 2024, appeared in a Bamako court on Monday.

The prosecution claims his remarks constitute a “public offense against a foreign head of state,” a violation punishable under Malian law.

However, Djim argued that his comments were misinterpreted and that he never explicitly mentioned President Traoré.

Apologizing for any misunderstanding, Djim emphasized the importance of fostering critical debates in the media.

The case has sparked discussions about balancing freedom of expression and respect for foreign leaders.

The trial’s verdict is expected on December 30, drawing significant public attention in Mali and beyond.
