Nigeria and Angola are battling fresh cholera outbreaks, with cases and fatalities reported in multiple regions.
In Nigeria, the first outbreak of the year emerged in Rivers State, claiming nine lives. Health officials confirmed three deaths in Andoni and six in Akuku-Toru local government areas. State Health Commissioner Ada Oreh noted that the region is particularly vulnerable to cholera and acute watery diarrhea during the dry season.
Angola faces a more severe crisis, with over 400 cases and 24 deaths reported since January 5th. The country’s Health Ministry revealed 39 new cases within the past 24 hours, primarily in the capital, Luanda.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cholera cases have been rising across Africa, affecting at least 14 countries in recent years.
Health authorities in both nations are working to contain the outbreaks and prevent further spread of the disease.
