Gabon’s Transitional Government Sets April 12 For Presidential Elections

The Gabonese Transitional Government has announced April 12, 2025, as the date for the country’s presidential elections.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, government spokesperson Seraphin Akure Davain confirmed that the Electoral College will convene on Saturday, April 12, with voting to take place from 7 am to 6 pm under existing electoral regulations.

This announcement follows the November 2024 referendum, where citizens approved a new constitution. The referendum came more than a year after the military coup that ousted President Ali Bongo in August 2023, leading to Gen. Brice Oligui Nguema assuming the role of transitional president.

The new constitution eliminates the office of the prime minister and introduces a seven-year renewable presidential term. It also stipulates that presidential candidates must have at least one Gabonese parent and hold no other nationality.
