The Gambian government has shortlisted nine candidates to serve as commissioners on the newly established Reparations Commission, tasked with identifying and compensating victims of human rights abuses committed during the Jammeh regime.
The commission was formed under the Victims Reparations Act, passed by the National Assembly in November 2023, to ensure accountability and justice for victims.
The nine shortlisted candidates will be vetted by the National Assembly, which will select seven commissioners to form the commission.
The Act mandates that the commission include representatives of victims, youth, women, and persons with disabilities. Additionally, the chairperson and vice-chairperson must be individuals with high qualifications and integrity.
The shortlisted candidates include a diverse mix of legal experts, civil society advocates, and medical professionals. They are:
Isatou Ndow, Dr. Badara Loum, Sirra Ndow,Isatou (Ayeshah) Jammeh, Safiatou Touray, Abdou Manneh, Ebou Faye Njie, Dr. Babanding Daffeh and Haddy Mboge Barrow.
Once constituted, the Reparations Commission will play a critical role in addressing the legacy of abuse during Yahya Jammeh’s rule and supporting victims through reparations and acknowledgment of their suffering.
