Gambia Immigration Department to Deport Dozens of Undocumented Immigrants

The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) has resolved to deport dozens of undocumented immigrants back to their home countries for unlawful residence in the country.

This initiative, revealed to newsmen on Monday, aligns with GID’s mission to curb irregular migration activities and undocumented stay within The Gambia under its new operation titled “Immigration Enforcement.”

Sulayman Kujabi, the Gambia Immigration Commissioner of Operations, disclosed that the immigrants have been prosecuted at the Brikama Magistrate Court.

He detailed the nationalities of the immigrants, which include 15 Guineans, 1 Malian, 5 Senegalese, 2 Nigerians, 3 Ivorians, 11 Sierra Leoneans, and 1 Beninese national.

Commissioner Kujabi reported that out of the prosecuted individuals, 33 have been convicted, while 5 cases remain pending.

The convicted individuals are set to be deported to their respective home countries as part of the GID’s stringent measures to enforce immigration laws and ensure legal residency within the country.

The GID further stated that 381 individuals were initially arrested, out of which 40 are Gambians, 13 Guinea-Bissau nationals, 84 Guineans, 52 Senegalese, 6 Mauritanians, 5 Malians, 89 Nigerians, 2 Beninese, 77 Sierra Leoneans, 11 Ivorians, 1 Liberian, and 1 Nigerien. Out of these 381 individuals, 303 were able to regularize their stay.

The “Immigration Enforcement” operation is expected to continue as the GID works to identify and prosecute other undocumented immigrants residing in the country unlawfully.
