GAMBIA: NAWEC Takes Action Against Senior Officials Over Alleged Corruption

Gambia’s National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) has taken disciplinary measures against two senior officials implicated in a corruption scandal.

In a statement released on Tuesday, NAWEC announced the termination of its Treasury Director, Babucarr Secka, and the suspension of its Finance Director, Cherno Omar Cham. The action follows the leak of a telephone conversation on social media, in which the two officials allegedly solicited bribes worth three million dalasis from an Indian supplier.

The discussion reportedly centered on inflating invoices for the supply of 400,000 meters of electrical cables from Devya Trading, violating company regulations and ethical standards.

NAWEC confirmed that police investigations are underway, and the implicated officials have been called for questioning. The company emphasized that legal action would follow if the allegations are substantiated.
