Gambian Compliance Officer Dies After Falling at Port of Banjul

A Gambian compliance officer has died after falling into the sea at the Port of Banjul.

The tragic incident occurred between midnight and 12:30 a.m. on the night of November 15-16, 2024, when 25-year-old Essa Colley, an employee of Global Tracking and Maritime Solutions (GTMS), fell into the water after waking up in an empty container near the quay.

Preliminary investigations by the Gambian Police indicate that Colley was attempting to urinate when he lost his footing and fell.

Witnesses reported hearing his cries for help, but strong waves made rescue attempts impossible.

Colley’s personal items, including his helmet, shoes, and notepad, were found at the scene.

His body was recovered around 6:00 p.m. the same day and later identified by his brother, Salifu Colley.

Medical authorities at Edward Francis Small University Hospital confirmed his death.

The Gambian Police have extended their condolences to Colley’s family, friends, and colleagues as they continue their investigation into the tragic incident.
