Gambian National Assembly Adopts Code of Conduct to Enhance Accountability

The Gambian National Assembly formally adopted its first-ever Code of Conduct on Monday. According to a statement published by the National Assembly, this code aims to provide clear guidelines for Members (NAMs) regarding the standards of conduct expected of them while fulfilling their parliamentary duties, as outlined by the Constitution and Standing Orders. It promotes openness and accountability, fostering public confidence in how Members conduct their parliamentary work.

Spearheaded by the National Assembly’s Privileges and Ethics Committee, the code also establishes procedures to ensure fairness in responding to any alleged breaches. While tabling the motion for approval, Hon. Alhagie S. Darbo, Minority Leader and Vice Chairperson of the Privileges and Ethics Committee, emphasized the code’s role as an institutional measure. He highlighted its function in holding Members accountable for their fundamental responsibilities, ensuring the effective functioning and integrity of Parliament. The code also promotes the ideals of democratic governance through separation of powers, the rule of law, and high standards of integrity and ethical behavior, including appropriate workplace conduct.

Members acknowledged the importance of a code of conduct for parliamentarians in any democracy. It establishes the expected standards of behavior for all those working within the parliamentary environment, fostering ethical conduct and building public trust in Parliament and its members.
