Gambia’s President Adama Barrow has announced his decision to withdraw a lawsuit against two journalists from The Voice newspaper, following discussions with representatives of the country’s media community.
The announcement was made on Monday after a delegation, including members of the Gambia Press Union, the Media Council of The Gambia, and other stakeholders, met with President Barrow at the State House in Banjul to address the case.
During the meeting, media representatives expressed concerns over the civil action previously filed against the journalists.
In response, President Barrow pledged to retract his legal complaint, underscoring his administration’s commitment to upholding freedom of expression and recognizing the media’s vital role in promoting democracy and the rule of law.
The President’s decision was warmly welcomed by the delegation, who viewed it as a significant move toward reinforcing The Gambia’s reputation as a defender of press freedom—an ongoing priority under Barrow’s leadership.
