Gambian Teachers Union Launches Nationwide Strike Over Unpaid Salaries

The Gambian Teachers Union (GTU) has initiated a nationwide sit-down strike in board and mission schools, effective Monday, to protest the government’s failure to address critical financial obligations.

The union cited the non-payment of November salaries and delays in disbursing the School Improvement Grant (SIG) for mission schools as the primary reasons for the industrial action.

According to the GTU, repeated efforts to engage the government on these issues have been met with silence, leaving teachers in financial hardship and schools struggling to maintain operations.

In a statement, the GTU expressed disappointment with the lack of progress in resolving these pressing matters. “Teachers are the backbone of our education system, yet we are being forced to work under untenable conditions.

This strike is a last resort after all attempts to dialogue with the government have failed,” the union emphasized.

The strike has disrupted learning in affected schools, highlighting growing discontent within the education sector. Parents, students, and other stakeholders have expressed concern over the impact of the industrial action, urging the government to address the union’s grievances promptly.
