Gambia’s President Barrow welcomes new ECOMIG commander

The Gambia has formally welcomed Commander Ndiagne Diouf as the new head of the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG).

Commander Diouf succeeds Colonel Boubacar Touré, who has been at the helm since last year, overseeing the regional forces tasked with maintaining peace and stability in the West African nation.

During a ceremony held to mark the leadership transition, Commander Diouf expressed his commitment to continuing ECOMIG’s mission of safeguarding The Gambia’s security and supporting its democratic institutions.

Colonel Touré, in his farewell address, reflected on the progress made during his tenure, emphasizing the importance of regional cooperation in fostering sustainable peace.

ECOMIG has played a pivotal role in The Gambia since its deployment in 2017, following the political impasse after the 2016 elections.

The mission has been instrumental in upholding security, strengthening governance, and supporting democratic reforms in the country.

The new leadership is expected to build on these efforts, ensuring the mission’s objectives align with the evolving needs of The Gambia and the broader ECOWAS region.
