Customs officers of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) have intercepted a cache of smuggled firearms and ammunition during a routine inspection at Tema Port.
The seized items included 53 sidearms, 74 magazines, and 65 rounds of live ammunition, concealed in a 40-foot container with registration number MEDU 449-6951.
The discovery, made on Friday, 15 November 2024, at the Golden Jubilee Terminal, led to the arrest of two suspects: the container’s agent and the consignee’s representative.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, 20 November, Brigadier General Zibrim Bawah Ayorrogo, Commissioner of GRA-Customs, confirmed that the concealed weapons were uncovered by customs officers and verified by the GRA intelligence team.
The seized firearms and ammunition, along with other concealed items, have been handed over to the Marine and Railway Police Station in Tema for further investigation.
Brigadier General Ayorrogo emphasized the legal requirements for importing firearms into Ghana, warning that unauthorised importation is a criminal offence with serious implications for national security and public safety.
The GRA has reiterated its commitment to ensuring strict enforcement of regulations to safeguard the country from illegal arms trafficking.
