Ghana Denies Claims of Diplomatic Tension with Burkina Faso

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has refuted claims made by former President John Mahama, alleging that President Akufo-Addo’s comments at the US-Africa Leaders’ Summit strained relations with Burkina Faso. Mahama criticized the president for suggesting that Burkina Faso had made a deal with Mali to employ Wagner forces, allegedly offering a mine as payment, which he claimed caused “diplomatic tension” between the two countries.

In a statement, the Ministry labeled Mahama’s assertions as unfounded and emphasized that relations between Ghana and Burkina Faso remain strong.

The Ministry cited ongoing collaborations, such as power generation projects between Burkina Faso’s SONABEL Power Company and Ghana’s Electricity Company of Ghana, and trade initiatives involving the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, which has established a presence in Burkina Faso to facilitate the transport of goods from Tema Harbour.

The Ministry reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to maintaining and strengthening ties with neighboring countries, stressing the importance of preventing misinformation that could damage international relations. It emphasized that Ghana’s interactions with Burkina Faso are grounded in mutual respect and cooperation, and the government remains dedicated to fostering positive relationships in the region.
