Ghana Police Arrest Over 80 Suspects for Election-Related Offences

The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has arrested 89 individuals nationwide for various election-related offences over the past two days. Among the suspects, 40 are accused of destroying and looting state properties, according to a police statement.

The arrests come in the wake of heightened tensions following the general elections.

The police warned against further acts of violence, with a spokesperson emphasizing, “Perpetrators will be arrested and brought to face justice.”

Security measures have been intensified to prevent further disturbances, with additional mechanisms on standby to address post-election unrest.

Recent incidents include an invasion of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) head office and the Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly in Accra.

Unidentified individuals, allegedly supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), vandalized office equipment, looted laptops, and removed pictures of outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo.

The 2024 elections have been marred by violence, resulting in three deaths and multiple injuries.

The GPS reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order amid the ongoing tensions.
