Ghana Reports First Mpox Case of 2024 Amidst Global Surge

Ghana Health authorities have confirmed the country’s first case of Mpox for the year 2024.

In a statement issued on Thursday, October 3, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) revealed that the National Public Health and Reference Laboratory identified the case in a young male patient from the Western North Region.

This announcement comes amidst a global surge in Mpox cases, prompting both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) to declare Mpox a Public Health Emergency earlier this year.

The GHS is urging the public to remain vigilant and follow health guidelines to prevent the spread of Mpox, which can have severe health consequences.

Authorities emphasize the importance of early detection and reporting of symptoms, along with maintaining good hygiene practices to mitigate transmission risks.

They concluded that, investigations and contact tracing efforts are underway to ensure community safety and curb any potential spread of the virus.
