Ghana’s Electoral Commission Destroys Defective Ballot Papers Ahead of December Polls

The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has destroyed defective presidential and parliamentary ballot papers intended for the Volta and Ahafo Regions after discovering discrepancies in their serial numbers.

This move aims to safeguard the integrity of the December 7 elections.

Under the supervision of political party representatives, independent observers, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), and the Police Service, the EC destroyed: 184 bags of defective presidential ballot papers for the Volta Region, 66 bags of defective parliamentary ballot papers for the Volta Region, 67 bags of defective presidential ballots for the Ahafo Region, 21 bags of defective parliamentary ballots for the Ahafo Region

Observers and party representatives verified the destruction process, confirmed the figures, and signed a certificate of destruction, with copies distributed to all parties.

Fred Tetteh, the EC’s Deputy Director of Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation, emphasized the importance of this measure in maintaining public confidence in the electoral process.

Earlier, the EC’s Deputy Chair of Operations, Samuel Tettey, announced the discovery of the flawed serial numbers, which prompted a reprint of the affected ballots.
