Ghana’s Electoral Commission Reports Widespread Electoral Violence on December 7

Ghana’s Electoral Commission on Friday detailed incidents of violence at nine counting centers during the December 7 general elections, leading to a temporary halt in the recount process.

The Commission’s report highlighted coordinated attacks targeting its personnel and infrastructure in different parts of the country.

The Eastern Region, Nsawam/Adoagyiri experienced the destruction of two ballot boxes, while in the Ashanti Region, the Commission’s local office was set on fire.

The most serious incident was reported in Techiman South, where an electoral official was forced at gunpoint to declare partial results from only 135 of the 282 polling stations in the constituency.

In Greater Accra, in Dome Kwabenya, polling agents were attacked and voting materials were set on fire, while in Ablekuman North, the security forces present were unable to prevent the destruction of electoral materials.

The Electoral Commission said the recount process in the affected areas was temporarily suspended, pending “adequate security conditions” promised by the Ghanaian police.

However, the incidents did not affect the victory of opposition candidate, John Dramani Mahama, who will succeed Nana Akufo-Addo as president.
