Ghana’s Electoral Commission has temporarily suspended the printing of presidential ballot papers for the forthcoming presidential elections.
This latest development follows the sudden death of the presidential candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Akua Donkor.
In a statement on Tuesday evening, Deputy Chairman Samuel Tettey of the Electoral Commission noted uncertainty in the 1992 Constitution and Public Elections Regulations regarding procedures if a presidential candidate dies before an election.
However, Article 50 (4) clarifies that if a candidate dies after nominations close but before the election, an additional 10 days will be allowed for new nominations.
Therefore, the commission has given the GFP 10 days to nominate a new presidential candidate.
Meanwhile, the vice-presidential candidate of the GFP, Kwabena Agyeman Appiah Kubi, told local media about his intentions to fill the vacant seat for the upcoming elections.
