Ghana’s Government to Deploy ‘River Guards’ to Combat Illegal Mining

Ghana’s government plans to deploy “River Guards” across major water bodies to combat illegal mining, known as “galamsey,” according to Samuel Abu Jinapor, the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources.

This initiative aims to protect rivers from the destructive effects of illegal mining, which has severely polluted water resources and damaged ecosystems.

Jinapor emphasized the government’s renewed commitment to addressing the issue, stating that the “River Guards” will patrol rivers, prevent illegal mining activities, and enforce environmental laws.

This move is part of a larger strategy to restore Ghana’s natural resources and safeguard the livelihoods of communities impacted by environmental degradation.

While the government’s stance has garnered widespread support from environmentalists and local communities, the fight against galamsey continues to face challenges due to the entrenched nature of illegal mining operations across the country.
