The Majority Members in Ghana’s Parliament have come to the defense of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkorno following her request for the appointment of five additional justices to the Supreme Court.
In a formal letter to President Akufo-Addo, Chief Justice Torkorno cited the immense workload of the nation’s Apex Court as the primary reason for her request.
The move has sparked debate, with some legal experts questioning its constitutionality.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the president of attempting to pack the court with too many judges, raising concerns about the potential implications for judicial independence.
However, in a media briefing, Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, defended the Chief Justice’s recommendation.
He argued that Chief Justice Torkorno’s actions are fully within the bounds of the law, asserting that her request is a necessary step to ensure the effective functioning of the Supreme Court amid its growing caseload.
