Ghana’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) has filed a legal challenge to stop the Electoral Commission (EC) from re-collating and redeclaring parliamentary results for the Dome-Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, Tema Central, and Obuasi East constituencies.
The NDC contends that the EC has exceeded its mandate and no longer holds the authority to revisit results already declared. This legal move follows disputes over the collation process, which the EC invalidated due to procedural irregularities.
Deputy EC Chair for Operations, Samuel Tettey, announced on December 13 that the results were nullified because of non-compliance with CI 127 procedures. He assured that police presence would ensure a smooth re-collation process.
However, the NDC, alongside candidates Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, Baba Sadiq, Ewurabena Aubynn, Ebi Bright, and Samuel Aboagye, argue that the EC has no legal basis to recount or redeclare results. The party has filed a court motion seeking an order to prevent the EC from proceeding with the re-collation, asserting the commission’s authority has been exhausted.
The legal battle underscores rising tensions over electoral processes and highlights the contentious nature of the disputed parliamentary results.
