Ghana’s Opposition Leader Questions Commitment to Peace Ahead of The 2024 Elections

Ghana’s opposition leader, John Dramani Mahama, has raised concerns about the sincerity of peace commitments among stakeholders ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Speaking at a peace pact signing event on Thursday, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer stressed that such agreements risk being meaningless without trust and genuine efforts to uphold peace.

Mahama pointed to events during the 2020 elections and the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election as reasons for skepticism, noting that the government’s failure to act on the Emile Short Commission’s recommendations undermines public confidence.

“The inaction of the government in the face of the murder of eight citizens during the last election casts a shadow of doubt on its commitment to peace.

How are we to believe that such killings would not reoccur?” Mahama questioned.

While acknowledging the importance of peace-building efforts, he cautioned that mere signing of pacts without concrete action would not guarantee lasting peace, urging all parties to demonstrate genuine dedication to maintaining stability during the electoral process.
