The National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus in Ghana’s Parliament has expressed its intent to defend its majority status when the house resumes on Tuesday.
This declaration follows a ruling by a five-member Supreme Court panel, chaired by the Chief Justice, which stayed the Speaker of Parliament’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant.
The Speaker’s action was initially in line with the country’s constitution.
The NDC MPs insist that the Speaker acted lawfully in his decision and remain resolute in upholding their majority.
They have also raised concerns about reports of an alleged plan to deploy the military during the session, an action they strongly oppose and have vowed to resist.
This development adds to the ongoing political tensions surrounding Ghana’s parliamentary dynamics ahead of the 2024 general elections.
