Ghana’s Speaker Declines Recall of Parliament Amid Election Campaigns

Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has turned down a request from Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to convene a two-day parliamentary session to address 22 urgent government business items.

Citing the proximity of the 2024 general elections, the Speaker emphasized that recalling Members of Parliament (MPs) would interfere with their campaign activities, which he deemed vital for the democratic process and national interest.

The decision has drawn mixed reactions, with some critics questioning the prioritization of campaigns over urgent legislative matters, while supporters view it as an acknowledgment of MPs’ critical role in the upcoming elections.
