Ghana’s Special Prosecutor Launches Investigation Into Corruption Tied to Illegal Mining

Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has initiated a comprehensive investigation into corruption linked to illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as “galamsey.”

This action comes in response to growing concerns over the severe environmental damage caused by unregulated mining activities, particularly the destruction of the country’s water bodies.

The investigation aims to tackle the long-term environmental, social, and economic consequences of galamsey. It will go beyond mere violations of mining regulations, focusing on the deeper corruption that has allowed illegal mining operations to thrive.

The OSP will investigate the involvement of influential individuals and groups who have enabled or profited from these activities.

The Office is committed to making corruption a high-risk venture for those involved, employing technology, intelligence-led operations, and well-structured systems to ensure fairness and accountability.

This investigation marks a crucial step toward combating the devastating impacts of galamsey and restoring confidence in Ghana’s mining industry.
